I've noticed many young kids talking on cell phones. How young do you think is too young?

It depends on the child, and your lifestyle. Certainly, a phone is useless for a pre-school child. Most elementary age children will lose it quickly. I'd say middle school age is ok. Most schools will confiscate cell phones, and you'll have to go to the school to retrieve it (I'm a middle school teacher). However, its great when you drop your child off at an event (football game, birthday party, etc.) so you can know when to get them. Its comforting to know they can reach you in an emergency.

The appropriate age is when the child knows resposibilities for themselves.

I didn't get my cell phone until i was 18. I didn't have my mother or father paying my phone bill for me. I paid for everything. I think if they can pay for everything i think they can have a cell phone. Kids can get jobs at 16, and i think that age is fine. They start to drive at that age and its a good thing to have a phone with you just in case something happens. Like a flat tire or your car wont start, or you locked your keys in your car.

I think kids are old enough to have a cell phone when they are old enough to pay for them. This assumes that they have a job, so I'd say around 16 or so. I don't see a real need for a child younger than that to have a cell phone anyway; it's a luxury.

I honestly don't think it's the age that matters so much as it matters on how/if they NEED them. Do they go places alone or with other kids? Do you feel they need one in case of an emergency? if not....then I don't think they need one till the time comes when you feel the phones are needed to keep in touch with them. But..if you need an age.....I'd say not under the age of 13...or even older perhaps. After all, cell phone are NOT toys, unless you have unlimited funds.....and wish to spoil your kids beyond belief.

I think it depends on the reason for a cell phone...and can they pay the bill?? A parent is not required to purchase a cell phone for their children...

Too young is when they keep losing their cell phones. I would say below 14.

It will depend upon the child in question. Maturity among children can vary so much. Also, I'd think about whether or not the child really needed the phone or just wanted one.

It depends. Are they playing any sports where you need to know when they will be picked up? Are they in a lot of clubs and activities? Out with friends a lot? If they are going to use the phone than it will be worth it. It is entirely up to you and your judgement.

When children enter middle school, it is an ideal time. I know a family that gave their 9 year old daughters cellular phones. I think that's crazy, because they barely use them.
