I would have to say that the DC-9-80 /MD-80 with over a thousand units in service is without a doubt the winner.

“Thirty years after beginning operations and more than a decade after the final aircraft rolled off the assembly line, DC-9s remain a mainstay in many airlines, still building a worldwide reputation for reliability and durability unmatched by any other aircraft. The fleet makes more than 3,500 flights per day, with each aircraft averaging more than five hours of revenue service daily.” **

As for remembering the Vickers VC-10 I do. In fact it is still in service with the RAF as a troop transport and aerial refueller. I never thought she was a good looking a/c though. She has stood the test of time and is up there with a/c such as the venerable 707.

What do you mean variant?
I built MD-80's and 90's until the end of the production run, about 20 years for me.
Please give more detail, and maybe I can help you.

MD-80s, these are currently or recently popular on medium distance for airliners but the new popular midsize-jets are Boeing 737s.
