It was invented as a way for the body to kill itself if nothing else had got to it yet. It was invented around 300 years ago and progressed during the industrial evolution as we began to age longer.
I don't think it would make a good Christmas present unless the person is suicidal. Easiest way is chain smoking and eating red meat all the time, box foods.

Cancer's always been around. I've seen photo's of dinosaur bones riddled with it in Smithsonian magazine and the Smithsonian book, Thread of Life.
