No, not legally.
Microsoft Word is not free ... ever.
However, try open office, at http://www.openoffice.org .... its free.
Alternatively, go to ebay and purchase an older version ... Office XP and Office 97 are both excellent, and you can get them inexpensively these days.

You can a free beta of Microsoft Office 2007. I highly recommend it as the best Office Suite yet. At first sight you may disagree and get a little confused -- I was -- but you'll get used to it, and I love it!

No but Abiword is a Free Download and it is compatible with Microsoft Word

Safer (and legal) to download the Open Office suite. Their Writer program is virtually identical and you can even save files in Word format if you wish. In fact, the whole suite is pretty near identical to MS Office - and it's free!

Not legally, there is peer 2 peer if you don't mind that.
The closest free alternative would be openoffice that you can get at http://www.openoffice.org. Its a free opensource office suite that is compatible with microsoft word files.
Windows also comes with wordpad that should open any word files.

No. You can get the Word Viewer from MS and there are alternatives to MS Word like Open Office which is the next best thing :)
