I found this riddle in one of my old Alfred Hitchcock magazines, and it's driving me CRAZY!!! First one to solve it, with a logical explaination supporting their answer, gets 10 points! Suerte!

Professor Dimwit's answer key to a physics test was stolen one day during one of his physics classes. Only 3 students-Amos, Burt, and Cobb- had the opportunity to steal the answer key.

1) Five physics classes had been held in the room that day.
2) Amos attended only 2 of the classes.
3) Burt attended only 3 of the classes.
4) Cobb attened only 4 of the classes.
5) The professor conducted only 3 of the classes.
6) Each of the three students attended only 2 of the professor's classes.
7) No two of the five classes were attended by the same group of students from the three students under suspicion.
8) Two of the three students, who attened one of the professor's classes that the third student did not attend, were proven innocent of the theft.

okay well lets say that there were 5 periods and the professor attended periods 2,3, and 4 by placing the students in the classes by how many they attended total and how many with the professor the only possible explanation is Burt.

ex.

1- Cobb and Burt
*2- Burt
*3-Amos Cobb and Burt
*4- Amos and Cobb
5-Cobb

*-teacher taught

by showing this it states that Burt did not attend class with the other 2 proving them Innocent!

1) Cobb[1] Amos[1]*
2) Cobb[2] Burt[1]
3) Burt[2]*
4) Cobb[3] Burt[3] Amos[2]*
5) Cobb[4]

*professor conducts class

"Two of the three students, who attended one of the professor's classes that the third student did not attend, were proven innocent of the theft."

Only time the professor conducts a class with two students is for Cobb and Amos, so the culprit must be Burt

EDIT: I just now noticed that windgaps0ccer reached the same conclusion as I did, only sooner...

It had to be Amos as two of the three students attended classes together and the professor only conducted 3 classes so that left Amos who only attended two classes together as the third one who did not attend with the other two and was not proven innocent.

wow in example below it Does show Burt in class with the other two yet he states he was not....

x² = x+6 x² - x - 6 = 0 (x - 3)(x + 2) = 0 So x = 3 or - 2 x² + 2x = 0 x(x + 2) = 0 So x = 0 or - 2 60 = x² - 4x x²- 4x - 60 = 0 (x - 10)(x + 6) = 0 So x = 10 or -6 4x = x² - 40 5 x² - 4x - 40 5 = 0 (x - 9)(x + 5) = 0 So x = 9 or -5 -6x = x² + 9 x² + 6x + 9 = 0 (x + 3)(x + 3) = 0 (x + 3)² = 0 So x = -3 -15=x² + 8x x² + 8x +15 = 0 (x + 5)(x + 3) = 0 So x = -5 or -3 -9x = x² + 14 x² + 9x + 14 = 0 (x + 7)(x + 2) = 0 So x = -7 or - 2 wish that enables. =D
