It's great that you're reading the Bible now!
Your almost done on your way to heaven!
What you need to do is accept Jesus in your heart. Tell yourself that you love him. Pray to him, tell him he's the reason for life, tell him you love him.
That's All, Jesus is now in your heart! Another fantastic thing to do that I definetly think you should do is get baptized. You'll just feel more complete, it's a great thing to do(you don't HAVE to do that to go to heaven..but God loves it when you do and you'll love it too!)
You need to stay faithful to him and love him until the day you die! If anything bad happens in your life, please don't blame it on him and become anti-Christian, it happens way too much in life. And don't just think now that you have accepted God that you can just sin and sin and sin away, because that's not a good thing to do.
Everybody sins, even Christians. But just don't TRY to do it or do it too often. When you sin ask God for forgiveness, and he will forgive you right away, no matter how bad it is!! Always love God.
Pray to God all the time! For dinner, the morning, and at night at LEAST. Thank God for everything wonderful he has done for us!
And if you were wondering, YES, you can have a sense of humor and you can joke around and all of that. Just try your best to keep it as clean as you can.
Finally, another awesome thing to do if you're a Christian is join the http://www.iBelieve.com forums.

Merry Christmas!!

All you need do is accept that Jesus is the Savior and the true son of God. Tell Him thanks, apologize for your past behaviour and invite Him into your life.
While it's important and fascinating- the Old Testament is before Jesus- the New one is all about Christ and His message was and is Love. You don't need to read the Bible in order. Read some New Testament, a couple of Psalms and a bit of the Old.
Opening your heart to His love is the most freeing and feeling there is... indescribable joy.
This is from someone else who could die at any time- I'm not stressed out. Staying here is a lot of work.
Talk to God and ask Him to open up The Word for you. He is very polite and waits to be asked.
He knows your heart so if you are truly looking for Him- you will find Him... actually He's there now and just waiting on you.
God bless and good luck. Merry Christmas.

hear the word ...the Bible
Romans 10:17
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
believe that Jesus was the Son of God
John 3:18
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already beause he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
repent your sins
Mark 6:12
They went out and preached that people should repent.
confess your sins
Matthew 10:32
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
be baptized ....put under the water all the way
Acts 22:16
16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
live faithfully ....obey the Bible
Revelation 2:10
10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

If you follow the tenets of Christianity and believe what it says, you need to accept Jesus as your Lord and personal saviour, follow God's rules, be kind to the poor and the sick, and then... die. I don't believe in Christianity because I understand its historical origins are a distortion of history - Christians might not like me saying so but I don't make the rules - I didn't write history, I just know what some of it is and as a result of that I no longer believe in Christianity. Nobody really knows what lies on the other side of death until we get there - it might be nothing and it might be everything but the only way to know is to die, and I hope you can put that off for a while. IMHO, better to be nice to people in this life as it is the one you are in now.

The only thing a Christian needs to do to get to Heaven is to believe that Jesus, the son of God, died for our sins. He died (and rose again) so that we would not have to die. Genesis is pretty confusing, the best thing to do before reading the Bible is to pray for God to help you understand the message he wants you to get from the Bible. Merry Christmas!

That depends on the denomination. The simplest way is to accept Christ as savior. Some denominations toss "Good works, and being Christ-like." If you believe Revelation, thyen only 44,000 or so people get in, the others get to live on the New Earth. Some things also state the following of Laws, though Christ was supposed to have broken the old covenant. Admitting Sins to God as well.

You're very wise because you've asked the most important question anyone, no matter their station in life, should ask. You're like the young man in Scripture who asked the same question, and similarly, from your sincerity it's clear you're not far from eternal life.
Relax from starting in Genesis though. You can come back to that later after you're stronger and understand more. You should read maybe Mark or John or Romans for starters.
Regarding your question, whether or not you accept the following will determine your eternal destiny:
"Whoever believes in the Son (Jesus) has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."John 3:16 "
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life." John 5:24
"For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:40

First of alll, a suggestion from a friend, read the Bible starting with Matthew that way you can learn about Jesus and who He is, and the way to go to heaven is through Him, love Him and accept Him as your Lord and saviour, so simple, so beautiful, but thats it :). Read further in the New Testament to learn further on what you can do, but thats the crux of it. I admire your wanting to learn and grow closer to God, and I pray the Holy Spirit will guide you and lead you on this journey.
God Bless
:)

Step 1 Believe in Jesus John 3:16
Step 2 Repent so your sins will be blotted out. Acts 3:19
Step 3 Confess your sins so God will forgive you. 1 John 1:9
Step 4 Receive salvation...Jesus will come into your heart.
