Occasionally I wake up during the night with my arms in the air, and I'm running my fingernails down them and lightly scratching them. I have sleep paralysis quite often with hypnagogic hallucinations, and I also have a propensity toward waking up to eat in the night (knowingly) to fall back to sleep.

Does anyone know what this is and why I do it? My dad also wakes up with his arms in the air scratching them.

And I also scratch other parts of my body because I will have cuts from time to time.

Once, I had huge deep gouges all down my arms (more than a foot long) when my nails must have been jagged.

Homeopathy may be a good thing to try to get this under control. They have what they call their Repertory, which lists symptoms such as these precisely.
