this is a nine week old puppy who was free from a friend... didn't pay a dime, i didn't breed the parents, german shepherd and bull mastiff... I believe that a person makes a dog aggresive or mild mannered, german shepareds aren't normally supposed to be agressive, they are made that way

Neither Mastiffs nor Shepherds (do you mean German?) are naturally aggressive (actually no dogs are that way naturally...anyway...). You have to start teaching him NOW that growling / snarling / biting / dominant behavior are not acceptable. If you have no idea how to do this, I really recommend getting a book about dog behavior and training at the library or book store. You need to make sure he knows from a very young age that you are the pack leader. He is young enough to learn this and become a perfectly delightful dog without much effort at all.

I would call a trainer and get signed up for classes ASAP. I would not be "waiting for a bite". The puppy seems to have a temperment issue and it needs to be dealt with SOON. NEUTER as soon as the vet will do it!!!

Not all dogs are MADE to be aggressive, some just ARE. YOU have a puppy htat is showing the signs of that NOW! You can either DO SOMETHING now while it is small enough, or you can wait until it is too big for you to handle and has bitten someone.
I have seen many dogs start like this and without proper training, they become aggressive, unpredictable, and a liability. They all came from good homes and people that loved them. They were not trained to be aggressive, but they were NOT trained at all.

YIKES! What were the people thinking mixing those two breeds? And what were you thinking buying him? just asking but haven`t you ever heard off all the reports of Mastiff, Germin Shepard, Pit bull, ect. atacks? German Shepards can be mean, ever wonder why Police use them, Because they can be mean, they aren`t afraid to use their teeth, and the police have a gun just incase. But hey, Not all german shepards are bad, some are the sweetest things. It`s more the Mastiff side i`ld be worried about especially mixed with Shepard.

Get him into some basic training classes as soon as he has had his shots. PetSmart has training classes for a reasonable price. PetCo may too, I don't know. Private trainers are out there too but usually more expensive. This will help you take control of your dog and it will socialize him too. Prevention is best. ; )

With proper training, this pup will be fine. He's probably growling due to fear of being around new people and in a new enviroment.
