As a long haul big rig driver I'm confronted with 55/70 zones in California all the time. As long as your not obstructing traffic and in the right lane it's safe to drive a little slower than the flow of traffic in the left lane. If traffic is going unreasonably fast try to go no slower than 15 mph under the fast flow speed. I drive 55 in a 70 all day 300 days a year and only once was rear ended in a construction zone where I had to stop with other traffic. I've been a professional driver for 22 years and have never been in an accident due to split speeds. As a rule of thumb don't drive faster than what you think is safe and always leave a safe distance between you and vehicle in front of you. At 55 mph a safe following distance for cars is 4 seconds.
Like my daddy use to say, "If you play long enough in a lightning storm, your bound to get hit sooner or later" Be safe out there now.

The best thing to do is to drive the speed limit and stay in the right lane. I have known multiple people who got tickets for speeding when they were following the flow of traffic. It is not a solid defense to say that you were going with the flow, since you're still breaking the law. I have also known people who got tickets for going 10 mph over the limit. If you're going over the posted limit, you can get a ticket. I always try to stay within five mph over or under, and I haven't been pulled over at all in my 8 years of driving. And I rarely hear of accidents from people driving too slow.

You usually can drive 5 miles over posted speed limit without getting a ticket. However, to conserve gas I would go speed limit and stay in the slow lane. Happy driving

If you are going with the flow of the traffic and a police car gets behind you, he can still stop you and cite you for speeding. He might choose not to, but why risk it? Do the speed limit and let the cowboys ride.

I stay in the slow lane and do the speed limit, or up to 5 over if I am comfortable at that pace. I'm also one of those annoying people who adjusts my speed down when the roads are bad.

In some places they allow up to 10 over the speed limit. Usually to be on the safe side, go with the flow.

Stay with the flow of traffic. Keep a safe distance. Don't change lanes erratically, and the fuzz won't bother you. They usually allow you 10 mph over the speed limit anyway. Driving too slow is much more dangerous.

all operator manuals including the c.d.l. manual tell you the safest speed to travel is what the traffic is moving at. they can't ticket thousands of cars, so go with the flow you only stand out if you change lanes a lot or pass already speeding cars.

I am a taxi driver and let me tell you it's much safer going with the flow of traffic but just drive carefully. Do like the other answers told you, keeping safe distance in front of you, etc. but I must recommend under any circumstances don't talk on your cellphone!
