Don't confuse 'mean' with 'tough'. Bulldogs aren't usually mean. You don't WANT him to be mean!~ What you want, is a dog whom you can trust...who KNOWS when to be protective, and when to be a pet. I'd wager that if someone tried to harm you, he'd show exactly how tough he is. Don't wish for him to show his aggression when it's not appropriate. Too many people do that, and end up having their dog put down after he bites a kid... ALL because they were stupid enough to MAKE them mean.
When you 'teach' a dog to be mean, you end up with a neurotic, aggressive animal who has not only the potential to bite the wrong person, but to turn on you as well (and don't start with the whole "I'd shoot my dog if he bit me!" cr@p). If you make him mean and he bites you...it's YOUR fault.

I have 2 American Bulldog males. They have 2 completely different personalities. They tend to be very friendly, although wary of some people. They have been bred to be people orientated for over 400 years. Am. Bulls are a pretty mellow breed, except when they feel threatened or their owners are threatened. They are great guard dogs. There are 2 subsections of the breed. 'Johnsons" tend to be more of a bully and independent type and 'Scotts' tend to more sensitive and loving. Although as with people, these traits can fluctuate from dog to dog, depending on how they are raised and their personality type. Both types need to be socialized with animals and people. A firm, structured upbringing is required with them as they need to taught that their owner is the 'Alpha'. Be glad you have a 'soft' Am. Bull.. They are the most loyal and loving dogs I have ever had and I would never wish them to be 'mean'. Neither should you.

you nasty, nasty person. How dare you want your dog to be mean? you don't deserve a dog you are sick. How would you feel if your dog was mean and got hold of and killed a child? I was mauled badly by a vicious American bulldog when i was a child and sadly the dog was destroyed. It wasn't the dogs fault, its the fault of pig ignorant owners like you. you are the sort of person who gets a kick out of violence, aren't you? think it makes you big and tough? it makes you a sad, pathetic little excuse for a human being and i hope your poor dog finds a better home asap

My american bulldog is 18 months and is a big baby. We have not raised her to be agressive. The only time she may turn mean is if someone was to try to hurt one of our family, and if that happened, they better watch out!

I hope not... He wont if you bring him up properly.
Are you saying that you want a mean dog?? or are you worried that he might turn mean?
Isn't it better to have a soft dog that people may perceive as mean for security reasons but is really a complete softy?

It depends on the owner if you treat him like your little angle then he will act like your little angle same goes the other way around that doesn't mean go out and toter him to make him tough because then you are an animal abuser and that's wrong.

He will only get mean if you train him that way. Pit Bulls are loving and loyal creatures that are easily swayed to their masters wishes, if you teach the dog to be horrid and mean, it will be, if you treat it with love and respect and take good care of it, it will live a long happy life!

Why do you want him to be mean? He is still a puppy right now.
BTW to the fool that said pitbulls are the meanest, I can tell you either have little or no experience with that breed.
