What they are trying to say is you should get down on your knees and Praise the Lawd that you were not born with short.. nappy.. african looking, afro type hair..

Instead you've been blessed with hair like the good white folks.. it's all long, straight, swings in the breeze.. just like a white lady.

** thats the meaning behind the words good hair when its said **

Ignorant people think its a compliment.. but by calling yours good, that means that every other black person not born that way has "bad hair"

I have beautiful, nappy, hair.. and it's healthy.. and that's what makes it GOOD.. All hair is good if it's healthy.

Wake up black people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and just to clarify.. in no way did i mean to offend the original question asker.. the first part of my answer was totally sarcastic and meant to take on the foolish tone of people who even open their mouth to say the words GOOD HAIR in 2006 and use it as a build up for one group, and a slap down for another group....

I'm sure you don't feel this way yourself.. Just tryin to keep it real and let you know the REAL DEAL when people give you those comments.. thats what they are trying to say.

and to further proove my point check out the answer by Pinky below my post.. just plain ignorant.

I'm a black teenager, some of my friends use that word. But my friends are black. I've only seen a white person say that then get beat up. The reason white people can't say that word is b/c they said as soon as slavery started. The white people used it all the time, and it is an offense to use that word against someone else. But notice, only black teens and some black adults, say the N word. The reason why most of us don't use it is b/c our ancestors fought in a civil war so no one could use the N word against them. But black teens, and some black adults, use that word b/c they don't know their history. If they did they would know it's offending.

It usually means curly or wavy as opposed to "nappy". But, I have seen big debates among black women who have curlier hair and do not relax it. Some feel that the term "good hair" is prejudicial to more highly textured, kinky hair and that it forces black women to live up to a white standard of beauty.

While it's good to realize the socio-political terms of "good hair", I'd take it as a compliment in general.

dragonslayer, if I were at a higher level, I'd give a thumbs up to you. Nice post!

One grade of hair is not better than another. The people who use the term 'good hair' have been raised to believe that what GOD gave Blacks is inferior to what HE gave Whites. It comes from the belief that anything black or black like is bad. Many black people have kinky hair and are proud of it and can do ALLOT with it. By good hair they mean your hair is white like. Another of the ills of slavery. I have kids with different hair textures and none is better that the other all their hair is GOOD.

Most of my people hair does not grow straight. When our hair grows it tends to curl and tangle which makes it hard to comb. That is where the term "nappy" comes from. That is why ladies sometimes put perms in their hair so they can straighten their hair. That is why my brothers where low cut styles or even bald heads. Good hair is when a persons hair is not as curly or "nappy" and is easy to comb.

I agree with you. "good hair" is in the eye of the beholder. I knew an African woman who had short but very kinky hair. She was extremely gorgeous and I found that her kinky hair only added to her sexiness.

Take that as a compliment. That means that you don't have nappy dried up hair. I am half black and have heard that all of my life too. Trust me you wouldn't want tight nappy hair it takes forever to comb through and you can't do anything with it.

its a matter of texture...some hair is easy to maintain and others is just "nappy". if your hair is straight thick and lays well it is said to be good hair...good hair is that hair after a relaxer only all the time...i hope that helps...its hard to explain...

I am mixed and I also have long hair, people always say to me oh you have some good hair. And when they say that it's because your hair is not nappy and short. So it's a good thing when people say that.
