SSI is awarded to not only people who are too ill to work but to those with all sorts of diabilities that affect the quality of life. I would imagine though that with HIV it must have progressed to AIDS or ARC to qualify a person. The rest of the information given by one of the folks is very good (about the SSA doctors, etc.). I would also imagine that your questions can be answered by the SSA website.

SSI stands for "supplemental security income", and it is given to those people that are too ill to work. The Social Security office will send you to their own doctors and ask for reports from the sick person's doctor to determine if the ill person is unable to work.

Give this a shot. It is a quick questionaire that does not access you specifically, but rather determines, based on your situation, if you qualify for SSI.
