I have a Sony flat screen TV that I bought last Christmas. It's not an HDTV but has good sound and picture. Will I be able to use a Blue Ray DVD player?

It would be pointless to play a BluRay DVD on a SDTV. The quality would be the same as a standard DVD player because both are being displayed in 480i/p.

I would still think the quality would be slightly better with a stanard DVD player because that is a significant amount that the BluRay DVD player would have to downscale. 1080p to 480p is huge. You would see jagged edges because there would have to be so much information to be stripped.

You can, but like you were wondering, it won't have the full effect. HDTVs have more lines (like computer screens with higher dot pitch etc...) of resolution. You will get a good picture but no better than a regular DVD.

It will work but not as it is intended. If you don't have an HDTV then you should just stick with a normal DVD player until you get an HDTV.
