What makes a person "troll"?

From my experiance, I use to troll because I used it as a form of therapy. I would be angry at someone, something, a situation, and come on to a forum or chatroom and take it out on people. But it wasn't therapy, it was more of an addiction, I had to do more of it, bored, indifferent, anything could trigger it. I would spend hours and hours trolling. I never fully stopped. My trolling activities have became infrequent.

For you Psychology and Computer Science majors, Grad Students and those practicing Psychology, Psychiatry or computer science, this could be a research project or book idea for you.

What an excellent suggestion for a research project!
I think a troll is a person who tries to be controversial for the sake of attention. By that definition I think many if not all who take part on Internet forums have resorted to trolling to some degree (I know I have).

Some of the reasons why I think a person resorts to trolling.
- Anonymity (expression in fairly safe environment).
- Attention (global audience)
- A feeling that everybody else has 'got it wrong'

People troll for different reasons. Some troll because they crave the attention and the reactions they get out of other posters and others troll because some issue is really bothering them and they want to tell somebody, so it's a form of catharsis. That's what I often did on Yahoo! before they closed down the message boards. I trolled because some issues really bothered me and I posted my opinions in the hope that somebody would agree and understand what I was trying to say.

I question what makes a troll ask the same question for years? We have a poster in this section who kept posting about her husband cheating on her, how she was reading his emails to the other woman, she was going to “confront” him soon, and a bunch of other nonsense. She had literally a new account every week to post the same question. There is a troll in the military section who is doing the same thing as well. What possesses a person to ask the same thing for years?

It's just fun to get a rise out of some people.

Annoying as it is, some simply do it for a paycheck.
