I can't remember there being a true definition of marriage in the bible. However there are references to husbands and wives. This however can't be used to prove anything either pro or con on the homosexual debate, but you can bet that the Christians will use the lack of mention of two men together, or two women together as definitive proof that being gay is wrong.

A ceremony usually is done. Required or not. That is why even if you go the the courthouse to get married, the judge will recite some sort of ceremony and the couple exchanges some sort of vows.

According to the Bible, a marriage is a holy union of a man and a woman with the main purpose of having children.
That is why there is staunch grounds regarding sex.

Having children however is an option, but God's guidelines regarding sex has no options.

The Biblical word marriage has several different translations such as "given to" and "celebration". A key one, reflecting the fertility rites of that time is "owner, master, lord," or as sometimes left in a text "baal."
It is a man and a woman consumating their relationship sexually in an agreed level of relationship. Thus David could marry several women. Solomon could marry the Pharoah's daughter, umpteen queens, and "own" some 700 concubines.
It is through the first "marriage" that the heir was expected to come, regardless of affection for any other cohabitation.
