I am a builder, yet have never heard the "spirits" reason for mirrors in the basement.
I would suggest that you might investigate for fissure cracks in the basement walls, possibly covered by the mirrors.
Another possibility is that they experienced leaks in the basement and did not want the new owners to see the visual or residual effects of the leaks.
Another possibility would be for personal security, if there are hidden corners or cubbyholes in the basement, to be able to see around and in those dark places without going into the basement.
Another possible reason would be to inspect for problems without being in harms way, such as, a furnace or water heater that is over heating and in danger of explosion.
May your investigative discoveries be little and your treasure of the new house be a joy for you and your family always!!

They probably thought it made a statement, like mirrors are supposed to reflect light and basements are dark also, they may have just liked mirrors and didn't have a place for them. Then again maybe they liked to watch ....whoever doing whatever..I am always thinking the weird. But, just get rid of them they aren't spirits. Though I do believe things like spirits are around places. You can annoint the doors of your home, I did when I moved in. I used olive oil and went around and blessed the house with the sign of a cross on the doorframes like the Jews did and may still do. I did the doorways and asked that nothing would be allowed to enter our home with any intention of harm, that my home would be blessed by God and all that enter be welcomed and that the house would always be a blessing to whoever entered and to rid it of any unkind spirits. Just in case. It never hurts.

I'm not an expert, but I know that mirrors can make a room appear bigger because they reflect it in the mirror and brighter because they reflect light. Maybe that's why they had them all over the place in the basement. Like I said, I'm not an expert.
Happy Holidays!!

Could also be cheap decor left over from the 70's or 80's. Mirrors on walls were huge back then.
Unless the people you bought the house from actually put those up themselves....cuz in that case...WOW they've got bad taste!

Hmm thats odd. It could be they just didn't feel like packing up and taking a bunch of mirrors with them. Especially with the risk of breakage. The extra care that would need to go into packing them to prevent that may have been more trouble than it was worth to them.
Some like mirrors all over because it's said to make spaces look LARGER as well.

I have (movable) mirrors all over my house so when I sell it and have prospective buyers going through, they can "see" themselves living there. If you don't like them, try frosting them with stencils and paint. If that doesn't work to your liking, the paint will easily scrape off.
