A ring is the shape of a circle. A circle has no beginning and no end. The wedding ring is supposed to signify unending love. That is only part of the answer. Back in the early days the thought was that the main vein in your arm starts at your heart and ends in that finger. So the two are tied together.

Im a minister and the ring is only a symbol of the love and commitment you have for each other. It is there to show the world that you are taken and not free to go with anyone else. I've never heard why it is where it is only what it means.
If a person wears the ring on the right hand instead of the left it means that the spouse has passed away, and they are a widow.

Americans wear the wedding ring traditionally on the ring finger of the left hand due to the fact it is closest to the heart, the band always goes on first. This is due to the religion we brought when we founded America. My girlfriend's family is from Greece and they wear theirs on the right hand, same finger. It is in the Orthodox tradition to do so, at least Greek. To my understanding it is a European tradition.

Here is information quoted from the Wikipedia article, and I have supplied a link as well.

"The choice of finger relates to traditions purportedly dating to classical times, from an early usage reportedly referring to the fourth finger of the left hand as containing the vena amoris or "vein of love". At least in part due to this tradition, it became acceptable to wear the wedding ring on this finger. By wearing rings on the fourth finger of their left hands, a married couple symbolically declares their eternal love for each other. This has now become a matter of tradition and etiquette."

Meeza has the right idea. It was first used by the Romans. They had the idea that there is a vein in the ring finger that goes directly to the heart, so if a man puts a ring of gold on that finger of his lady, she was his.

When my cousin divorced, she took her rings off and put them on the finger you mentioned. I guess you could say it is like when you graduate, your freedom, no more teachers telling you what to do and breathing down your throat to get home work done. When grads do the toss on their caps, means the same thing as changing the ring from the left hand to right hand. Difference is, the hat tassel is not worth as much as the ring at a pawn shopp.

Your right hand is your help, strength, confidence, assurance, plus the right hand position is associated with the righteousness of God

It's like a Divine right that is guaranteed by Him and in Him all power resides,so when both understand their boundaries there are no divorces.

there is another culture that puts the rings on the right hand. im not sure of which one it is but i once heard a couple on the radio that put rings on both fingers because of the american and other culture. also, the bride added his name to her name and the groom added her maiden name to his name so they both have a hyphened last name with both her maiden name and his name.
