Hoy...rude or not?

in Tagalog is it considered rude to say that? maybe not with friends but what about adults?

Among friends, HOY is okay but it's rude to say that to adults.

I had a Filipino housemate who used to greet everyone with 'hoy' - I honestly don't think she was being rude.

Depends on how close you are to the person.
