In the US for 2006:
Median salary for dentists is about $120,000
Median salary for optometrists is about $98,000
According to Salary.com

Specialists in different branches of dentistry make still more, of course dental school is more rigorous than optometry school. But you have to do what you like, the question is how many years can you take of being a "......."?

A dentist is a doctor. An optometrist fills prescriptions for lenses and cannot treat diseases of the eye.

An opthamologist is a doctor and may perform surgery on the eyes.

Big difference.

Earnings of Optometrists depend on their management abilities, the size and income of the community in which they practice, their length of time in practice, and their type of practice.

Nationally, in 2005, the median net income of Optometrists in sole practice ranged between $110,000 and $122,697 per year. Expenses were about 79% of annual gross income.

Those employed by the federal government started at $54,138 per year (2005), with chief Optometrists earning up to $139,436 annually. The salaries of these federal government workers may be higher in some urban areas. The median yearly earnings of "all" workers in the U.S. were $33,852 in 2005.

Optometrists who were employed by hospitals and related health facilities earned (2005) between $70,100 and $143,600, with the average of $98,900 per year.
Dentists
In 2005, most dentists earned salaries in the $95-150000 range. ... Specialists average about $240000 a year.
