They're just trying to make sure you took a shower or not.

Dogs get most of their information from smell. By sniffing butts - both human and canine - they can tell if the person or dog is male or female and I think what they have been eating. In the case of other dogs they can also tell if the dog has been fixed or is receptive to breeding.
