January is a slow time for Europe and N America. Flights are cheaper. It is an expensive time for the southern hemisphere (summer there).

If you are looking for a cheap flight, ignore the websites which are confusing. Go to any decent travel agent (Independent, American Express, even good branches of the holiday companies) and ask directly about 'consolidated' flight availability. I have traveled regularly to the States for less than websites' real booking prices by using this method. Tickets first become available 2-3 months before the flight date, but given that January is slow, there may well be tickets left now.

You can go on the internet and look up prices now. The sooner you book, the more time you have before hand the cheaper the tickets. Usually two weeks or more. If they anticipate less travelers they may lower the prices. Depends on the dates. Near New Years or the first part of the month there will not be any deals. Vacation is over. look and see. The websites for different airlines or websites like cheap tickets.com let you put in different dates to find the cheapest dates to fly if you are that flexible. Good luck.

Depending on when and where you go, you can get some good deals in January. Just got a good deal from Kansas City to Tampa for $138 on Midwest Airlines in less than two weeks.

But it really depends on where you're going... and travelling from...

Because January is still HIGH season for flights to and from South Pacific!
