For instance, wouldn't you have far more of a case against gays,
abortion, promiscuity, etc, (other, "soft" sins, besides the obvious violent violations against humanity)... If it weren't argued on the basis that it is "sinful" and attempt to back it up with vague and relatively meaningless bible verses?
If you are a conservative, if you want to get your point across and make a larger impact, it shouldn't be because "you will make baby Jesus cry".
Or does it even matter if all that matters is not conduct but only if you "believe"? And if that's true, why do you make such a fuss about Abortion?
(I'm mostly anti-abortion by the way, so don't go into the justice of abortion with bible drivel, try to look at it from a philosophical outside perspective.
Why, Besides God, are some crimes to you far worse to you than others, and don't you think you could make more progress by leaving God out of your debate all together, since it automatically makes you lose credibility?)

Who says it doesn't? In ancient times, preaching the word of the Lord proved to be very effective for cleaning up the society. (E-mail me if you want the reference.)
But in answer to your question, I agree that people should take their audience in consideration when trying to convince people to do or not do something.

There is no categorizing of sin.
Sin is the transgression of the law (1 John 4:3).
If you offend in one point, you are guilty of all (James 2:10).
Why does "striking the fear of the Lord" into people not work?
They usually try to do it by threatening people with hell, which is a lie. Hell is a construct of the King James Bible. The KJV is peppered with the word "hell". It's no wonder people believe in hell. However, it does not exist (at least not the traditional hell that people have come to know and lover over the centuries).

Let's not get into relativity. My credibility is not based on what you have previously read or heard, in your life. There is a universal constant. Right?
And, exactly WHO does what, to 'strike the fear of the Lord' into a person? If I try to be that person, we just end up hostile and defensive. I have come to a point where all failure is equal. No person is innocent. From stealing a quarter from dad, to killing a person. It is what you do after realizing you are wrong.

The Bible gives us two points, as to why striking the fear of the Lord, doesnt work.
First the Bible says that mankind goes about "establishing" their "own" righteousness.
And, in another place that mankind is "Pure" in their own eyes, and have not washed from the fifthieness.

"Voilá! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V."

You must love God, for God is love. You should fear the brunt of His punishment though.
God asks only one thing from us and that is love, in the form of obedience to His will, be it big or small. But all of us in our human frailties and weaknesses choose to disobey and try to legitimize and justify the evil we do. And we let our egos, self indulgences, arrogance and pride do all the justifications.

i am a christian. I do agree with what you are saying though. whether it says in the bible that something is a sin or not, not everyone believes in it. so that is a weak argument. everyone has their own choices and beliefs.

Believing in "god," "jesus," "afterlife" is for insecure stupid people. By that i mean people with an I.Q. in the 80's or 90's.
