Technical the solution is easy: burn 500 calories more than you eat. For example, eat about 1500 calories a day (which will almost definitely burned just by everyday walking, moving, thinking, etc.) a day and burn 500 (usually this means about 40 minutes to 1 hour worth of exercise a day...try using an exercise machine that counts calories burned, like an elliptical machine).
Far as how to eat only 1500 calories a day (vs. the more like 2000-2500 most people have) without being starved, simply follow a balanced diet: eat mostly beans, vegetables, nuts, fish (preferrably cheap, fairly small fish like tilapia) and other grilled white meats, and some fruits but never have juices or sugary drinks (stick with decaf teas and water). This is somewhat similar to the Zone Diet, only it does not require any funny expensive commercial supplements like olive oil or high potency fish pills.

You have to burn 500 calories more than you eat. The easiest way is too fast which means to not take in any food-- just water. Site below tells more about the connection between fasting and losing weight. Also has fasting page with quotes about fasting from 16 MDs in case someone thinks it is not healthy or does not work.

Mild excersice on the treadmill will lose you about 150 calories. Eating less one slice of bread with butter, about 100 calories, dont eat junk food (about 250 calories). All above will lose you 500 calories a day!.
GOOD LUCK!

either exercise enough to burn 500 calories or cut out 500 calories from your diet or a combination of both. i.e drop one soda and work out for half and hour on a treadmill or stairmaster or something. keep track of everything you eat (everything) for a week. At the end of the week look and see what you can live without each day and stop eating it.

Yes you can, just hop on an elliptical or (Tony Little's) gazelle for about 45 minutes to an hour while you're watching TV and you should be able to lose it.
