First of all you would want a HDTV not a EDTV or anything else. Next, you should decide on what types of technology you want and how big the tv is. Anything smaller than 37" i would go with a LCD. Larger than 37" you can buy a CRT tv (the regular bulky type), DLP or PLasma. I would suggest you look for a PLasma or DLP because CRT is a dinosaur.

The DLP TV is the best out right now, It's Direct Light Processing it also has tiny mirrors in it that makes the picture crytal clear. The Plasmas' are no good at all.

It depends on what size. For smaller TVs, the LCD is probably the best. For larger, either plasma or DLP, but each has it's pluses and minuses.
