In two week me and 5 of my friends are venturing from New York to Mt. Tremblant, Quebec for some skiing. I've never been to Canada and all i want to know is if they are strict at the border and if they do a full out search on the vehicles, people, luggage, etc. I know they are probably strict comming into the US but I'm not worried about that, just crossing into Canada is my main concern for certain unspecified reasons.

I doubt if they will search you, your car, or your stuff, either direction.

Starting January 1, you will need a passport to fly into the US.
Starting January 1, 2008, you will need a passport to enter the US by land or sea.

First of all, Magoodfellow should read his own link he posts. To return to the USA by air you need a passport by January 23, 2007. Not January 1. Road and sea will be at the earliest January 2008.

Anyways....how strict is the border. If you are younger, your chances of being searched are greater, The border guards seem to think young=skiing=drugs=rubber gloves. (if ya know what I mean) Be very friendly and helpful and no attititude. Dont give them any reason to doubt you. Look them in the eye as well.

Depends on the day too...my brother used to go over the Manitoba/North Dakota border weekly for 2 years; no problems since they knew he was going to school down there. Then one day they took his car apart and made him prove his musical instrument was his.

So....be good and you should be okay....but dont be doing anything bad just in case you DO get caught.

Enjoy your trip

I went to Canada over Thanksgiving and there was no problem at all. We stopped at the border and they looked at our id's, asked us a few questions about where we were going, why we were visiting Canada, how long we intended to stay and a few other things, but it only took a few minutes. The border guards going into Canada were not armed. Coming back was different. Armed guards, more specific questions, a closer look at us, etc, but still not a really big deal. I wouldn't suggest carrying any "contraband" into Canada though if that's your "unspecified reason". Have a fun trip.

First, read Mat. Little or no snow right now. Check and see if Tremblant has snowmaking.

As for crossing border, I do it twice a month. Americans usually more severe than Canadians, but Canadians tend to do more questions and searching at the major (Interstate 87 and 89) crossing points.

For traveling to Canada by car you do not need a passport yet. They do look through your vehicle but will not check your bags real thoroughly. They will ask you questions about the purpose of your trip and get your names. If you are planning on bringing some weed or some booze into the country you should be fine. Just try to put your weed in a pocket of clothing on the bottom of your bag. You might want to try to hid the booze somewhere in the interior of your car.

Have a fun trip.

How old are you. Under 21 and they might harass you a bit more. They don't normally search vehicles, but they will check everyone's name in a computer. If any of you have records then your odds of getting searched go up.
I go over several times a year and the only time I got searched was when I was with a guy who had a prior for pot.

u better check that snow schudul because i know here we are expericinging no snow which is not normal and they dont' forcast it right now, i'm in south ontario, and there is not even skiing at all, not even the fake snow because u need a base of snow to make it, so u might come to ski and not end up skiing and the border is easy for you to get here but will be harder to get back to the US they might search you, they get scared cuz alot of people have it in for the US so they tightened security

crossing the border into Canada is like crossing any other international border
you must have all the proper i.d and if you have a criminal record and or contraband expect to be refused entry or worse arrested
