First, you should ask your physician to help you confirm whether you actually have carpal tunnel syndrome and not another cause for numbness and pain in the wrist and hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome causes tingling pain and numbness in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and the inner half of the ring finger. This is caused by pressure on the median nerve as it travels through the wrist.

Other conditions that should be rule out include low thyroid function and low vitamin B12 levels.

Once confirmed, the usual first step is to eliminate or reduce activities which are aggravating the compression at the wrist. Examples include modifying the setup of one's work station (keyboard, mouse, etc).

Neutralizing wrist splints can be used to hold the wrist in a neutral position at night while sleeping. This prevents the wrist from bending and putting pressure on the median nerve.

If that is not helpful, then it may be necessary as a last resort to undergo surgery to release pressure on the nerve.

First, I am not selling anything. For over a year I had carpal tunnel. I got diagnosed by 2 doctors and they both suggested surgery. However, surgery is not a cure and CT could reoccur. I went to www.carpaltunnelinstitute.org and bought their dvd that shows you exercises/stretches. I did them for 3 months and my CT symptoms/pain were gone.

Anyone contemplating surgery, please check out this dvd. If you are like me and don't trust the doctors, do yourself a favor and check this cure out. I wasted hundreds of dollars on incompetent doctors, and was ridiculed by them when I told them I wanted to try physical therapy/stretching to see if it would work before surgery. It did. www.carpaltunnelinstitute.org

You have to have these braces to sleep in. They are uncomfortable at first, but it is better than your arms going numb all during the night like mine do. You will have to get them from a doctor, but they really help if you sleep in them faithfully. I'll probably have to have surgery one of these days, but the braces work for now.
