It is the first letter in the Greek word for Christ. It represents Christ. Like the fish represents Christianity.

I had read about it a long time ago, but I don't know where the book is. Xmas is a shortcut for Christmas. Many use it to take Christ out of Christmas, but I don't.

This was just answered recently. The "X" was originally the Greek letter Chi, which is an X. It was the first letter of Christ's name in the Greek alphabet. It was used as a shortcut a long time ago as well.

Some people think the X can also symbolize the cross, and of course it is used like "Xian". (Christian).

The X does stand for something. The X is an abbreviation for Xristos which is the Greek word for Christ. So Xmas = Xristosmas= Christmas.

It's "X" ing Christ, out of Christmas. And bring in the Mass of the Catholic church.

Kind of reminds me of a joke, where a Baptist, moved into a Catholic neighborhood, and every friday evening would fire up his grill, and toss a great big steak on it. This was a violation of the neighborhood law of the catholics. So they had a meeting with him, and after, hours of taking to him was able to convert him to their belief. Which ended with the Priest, making a sign of a cross in front of him and saying. You were born a baptist, and raised a baptist, you are now catholic.

Oh the neighborhood was a happy one, till friday came alone, and they could smell the savor of the steak on the grill.

Disappointed, they went over to his house and looked over the fence to see what was going on. And they saw him, making the sign of the cross over the steak saying; You were born a steer, and raised a steer. You're now a fish.

The "X" is not an ex, it is chi, a Greek alphabet and the first letter in Christ (Gk. Cristos). The symbol is ancient.
