Rip the legs off (should come off in a clump), then peel the shell of the body. You can cut the tail off if you want, some people leave it off.
To devein - use a small knife, cut along the middle back, from "neck" to tail. Don't cut deeper than about 1/2 the thickness of the body. You should see the vein as a dark "string" - use the tip of the knife to pull it out.
That's it! Cook shrimp until just turns white/pink and enjoy.

Ha. I like how you worded your question. First of all, you are lucky to be getting them still in the shell. Much healthier than the pre-cooked processed stuff you buy in the super market. If the shrimp is frozen??? fill the sink with cold water and dump 'em in. Once thawed...though you always need to keep them cold or they will get mushy....split open the underside of shrimp with your thumb. If they are nice and cold, you can just run your finger from the butt end to under the head and it should pop out. To devein...and yes, that is the right terminology...simply use a small, very sharp peeling knife. From the tail end of the shrimp on the underside, you will see a dark 'vein' running through. Make a little pierce at the bottom and slice it with the knife, very shallow as this vein is near the surface, towards the top. Then take the side of the knife and grab the bottom part of the vein from the bottom, pulling it out as you go. May need to pick at it a little, likely won't get it all in one swoop. Once finished, throw cleaned shrimp in a large bowl with ice. That will keep them nice and firm and ready to cook!
Hope this helps!!
FYI - I live in Minneapolis. We have a guy downtown who also sells shrimp for around $1.00 per pound. He is a wholesaler, and makes his money via volume. People line up everytime his truck makes it's stop on Friday afternoons. It's good shrimp. And I am sure unless your guy is selling it in a dark alley someplace, it is up to code. I also use to work at a highend grocery store. They bought frozen shrimp for 69 cents a pound, thawed it out, put it on ice in the display case and sold it as "fresh shrimp" for $5.69 a pound. Talk about a rip off!!

They sell that kind at the grocery, too.
If you're going to boil the shrimp, leave the shell on. After the shrimp are cooked, you can easily peel off their shells. Then take a sharp knife and make a slit along the back of the shrimp. Pull out the mud vein and discard it.
If you're going to grill them, you should peel and devein them before you cook them. It's a little harder, but not significantly so.

Uncooked shrimp can be put in boiling water and cook in about 5 minutes. It turns pink almost the instant it hits boiling water. While boiling, the shrimp usually get cleaned as well. After they are done you just peel off the shell and the very small black vein usually comes with it. YUMMY!

To peel, pull off the tail and then peel away the shell. To de vein, slice with a knife down the back of the shrimp and pull out the vein. Thats it. We do it all the time.

I agree with Bubbles.
How you clean and cook this shrimp may not really matter if it isn't good. $1 per pound is just crazy unless you live on the Gulf Coast, in which case you would already know the answer to your question.
Make sure this shrimp is fresh (does it look and smell good). Otherwise, go to the market and pay more for better quality.

cut a slit along the top rounded part. There will be a tiny little worm like thing inside which can be eaten with no health problems really. It just looks funny. The shell will peel off easily along with the "vein"

Mostly everything should come off all together. . . .The legs should come off first as you pull, and then move the shell down, and it'll slide right off. You can take the tail off now too. Then take a small knife and slice down the back and pull out the vein. Rinse with cold water.

$1 per pound? My question would be where is this shrimp coming from more so than how to devein it.

you first cut the head and the legs and the you "pull out the shell but it s better if you fry them and peel them while eating. like lobster.
