High capacity "thumb drive"-like doodads that can store all the data needed within a postage stamp sized chip.

HD-DVD, and especialy Blu-Ray disk show promise for high def movies and high computer storage capacities for any type of file, but who knows wich format will win? They may both get taken out by high capacity flash memory or streaming content. In the long run, I think holographic memory will be the future, you could literally store all of your movies, music, games, and other files all on a single disk, the only problem is that readers/burners for holographic memory are said to be over $20K to produce... All in all we will probably see the disalution of TV into internet on demand content, I hardly watch TV anymore because of it

You're on it! Broadband streaming sites like Youtube, Google and Yahoo Video, stupidvideos.com, CNN.com, etc.

I used to want cable TV, but right now, I can watch several shows on internet websites that stream them, plus the internet is much more interactive. Even "movies" like those on atomfilms.com makes it easy to see what you want when you want, and ratings provide an easy way for good stuff to rise to the top.

I doubt they'll compete directly with dvd's and HD or BluRay discs, but they have their own niche.

Something along the lines of flash memory, or something similar to the iPod. After that, maybe something having to do quantum teleportation, which is in it's infancy right now.

Discs are fine. But next I think we'll have donuts that play music.

Holographic recording on discs.

See http://www.physorg.com/news967.html for a story of the first application of this.

things like the nintendo 64 games..
except movies..

notice, all media is now able to be downloaded or uploaded to a portable storage device (usb flashdrive etc.)

i'm guessing that media is going to move to those.

think about it.. you can't scratch them, you could break them i suppose.. but only if you tried... they're portable and easy to handle.
