If your green card is expired, you are in this country illegally.
You cannot legally apply for work until you get a renewal.

Either you are a troll or you are one of the most ignorant humans walking the Earth. If you have a conditional Green Card, then you need to file for Removal of Conditions within the 90 days prior to the expiration of your card via form I-751, accompanied by a truck load of documents. If you do not do this, or do not get approved, your residency ends the day your Green Card expires. That means you are going home. If your Green Card is really a conditional card that expired in May, there is nothing you, your wife, President Obama, or the Almighty could do to "fix" that. The only thing you can do is file for AoS again, like you never had a Green Card to begin with, but even that is not as easy as as sounds in a situation like yours. Applying for citizenship not only requires a valid Green Card, but also that this valid Green Card is at least valid for another 6 months by the time you mail in your N-400.

You are not here illegally because you have a pending renewal being processed. if your employer wants documents take your old card in and also take in your renewal papers in with you. If that is not good enough for them you might be out of luck. You can also get a temporary stamp from your local immigration office in your passport. It is commendable that you are taking the right path and not just becoming an illegal.

These guys often come up short when it comes to deadlines and stuff... you have to apply for the renewal early, but you can't apply earlier than a certain date, and they still don't always give it to you on time.
Check on the status of your application... and you might be able to get proof that you have an application pending to show your employer. Unfortunately your employer may have to wait for the new one anyway, and even with this show of good faith, may have to say well, we can't wait, tough. I'm sorry if you miss out on the job for this and I wish you good luck.

You should file a document called I-90
When you file you will receive a letter saying that your petition is in process, you can present that letter to your employer.
