French Bulldog. They shed very little, are not yappy dogs, and love children. They are very sweet and calm.

Medium to small-to me that says won't exceed 40 pounds at full size. I would say that mini schnauzers and poodles are good-but will mean trips to the groomer every 4-6 weeks for up keep. Brittanys don't shed a huge amount ( they will blow a summer and winter coat). Groomers maybe 3-4 times a year. Try to go to a dog show or a groomers and ask questions. Also, dont fall for short hair meaning no shedding! Some short hair dogs will shed like crazy. But try to look for the type of dog that fits your family-you can always clean a little extra for the right dog! And don't fal for the mythical hypo-allergenci dog! That is not tru-some dogs are less likely to bother allergies (like whippets, greyhounds, basenjis, poodles) but no dog will be totally hypoallergenic.

Papillon - cute dogs with huge ears. They are so small that anything shed is barely noticed. They are fun loving and loyal and make good lap dogs.

I have a bichon frise that does not shed at all. He is soo freindly and good natured. He is good with kids and really good with my other dogs. We keep him cut short to avoid the entire bichon grooming process and he looks so cute cut short. The American Kennel Club has some good info as well as if you are looking to rescue a dog, Petfinderplus.com has rescues and screens them to say which dogs are good with other dogs, kids, cats. etc.

Poodle-toy or standard have hair, not fut, and are low-shed...they are also great family dogs if you have the room for play and exercise for them.
NOT the frilly, froofy dogs people think they are. They are Sporting Dogs and thrive on water and running!!

Lhasa Apso... I have one, my mom has one, my brother has one and our best friends have one. Each have their own personalities but each also are loving and very friendly... Yes they have long hair in most pictures but all of the above keep the hair cut short... Not because they shed (which they do not!) but because the long hair collects stuff from outside...

Lhasa Apso... small dog... doesn't shed at all. But, their hair continues to grow, like yours does. It'll get really long, so might have to be trimmed now and then.

You could try a dog such as a shih tzu, but as with any dog (esp toy dogs), you'll want to have him/her temperament tested since they can be snappish, especially around children.
