You could try this: make up a gift basket for the dog. Include not only a doggy shampoo/bath formula(to get rid of the odor), but also chew toys, dog biscuits, and/or flea powder. That way, the blow is softened.

Ask her if she has noticed that her dog really smells like poop, maybe she is used to his smell and can't tell. I would apprecite it if someone told me - as long as they told me nicely and not "your dog is ***** gross.." Then I might not appreciate it so much.
