I am not choosing word pad because it does not give page numbers

Sounds like the "doc" extension is associated with WordPad rather than Word. You can change that by right clicking on an doc file and selecting "Open with...".
Browse through the available programs and find Word (rather than Wordpad). Select Word, and then check the box at the bottom that says to always use that program for that kind of file.

Make sure the document ends with ".doc" and the "Save As Type" is .Word Document .doc.
