The amount of borborygmi is related to the activity of the gut and the amount of gas produced by the bacteria that ferment the food in your gut. This is also related to the bloated feeling and belching.

Certain foods result in the creation of more gas than others, and baked beans are famous for this effect. Any high fibre and high carbohydrate (sugary or starchy) foods can aggravate flatulence (wind) and stomach rumblings, so it will be worth looking at your diet to see if you can modify your diet to reduce these sorts of food.

You do not say if you get pain, but you do mention diarrhoea. If you get increased flatulence and pain and diarrhoea at times, then it is possible you may have irritable bowel syndrome. In this condition, there are excessive spasms of the gut, and there is disordered bowel function as well as increased flatulence. You would need to discuss this possibility with your doctor if you think you might fit into this symptom complex.

There are other over-the-counter medicines you could try. Colpermin and Mintec are peppermint-containing treatments that can reduce gut irritability and spasm, and Colofac is an antispasmodic that can help reduce the bowel spasms.

According to the dictionary, borborygmi is intestinal rumbling caused by moving gas. If you are asking how to decrease the amount of gas in your intestinal tract, I have a couple of suggestions.

Intestinal gas is produced when you eat legumes like pinto beans, black beans or split peas, because the body does not have the proper enzymes to digest the fiber in beans. I have found BeanO to be the best product to use to avoid the gas. It Really Works!!!

Another question to ask yourself is about how much air you swallow. If you swallow a lot of air, while talking, breathing, sighing, drinking soda, or chewing gum, you may be in trouble. Air has to either come back up, or go on out; it is not absorbed.

So check yourself for swallowing of air to see if that is one cause. Solving the problem would be learning to now swallow too much air.

Good Luck. LH
