Work one or two different body parts a day as hard as you can.

Then the next day work on one or two more muscles. Give the other muscles time to recover or you won't progress as fast.

Taking a day off once a week is good as well to regain some mass.

It helps to create a schedule for yourself as well as varying the exercises you do. The more variety you have with your workouts the better your muscles will grow.

Your muscles need time to recover and grow. Exercising them too often is known as 'overtraining' and can stall your growth and lead to injury.

Organize your workouts into muscle groups (legs, chest and arms, back, for example), and only work each group once a week. Do one group every other day. On the days between workouts do aerobic exercises to improve your cardiovascular system. Strong muscles aren't any use if your heart and lungs can't deliver the oxygen they need to work. Skip a day on the weekend and rest.

You can sometimes make gains faster by increasing your workout weights slowly over the course of about 6 or 8 weeks, then taking a full week off before restarting the cycle using a weight slightly greater than the starting weight from the previous cycle.

As you get into your workout routine you should notice that your muscles stop getting sore after a workout, or the soreness will be very mild. Excessive soreness is a sign of overtraining and should be avoided.

Be sure to change up the exercises you do for each group every once in a while, don't get in rut of doing only a few different exercises. Don't be macho and lift as much as you can! Lift the 'right' amount of weight, you aren't trying to impress anyone, you are trying to increase strength and avoid injury. Concentrate on proper form and technique.

Exercise only provides the stimulus your diet and caloric intake will determine how much muscle you gain. you should alternate between low-medium-high reps for each body part. train each body part 2x a week with at leat 48 hours inbetween training sessions.

a good workout would be something like this:

Mon - Chest/Shoulders/Triceps
Tues - Off
Wed - Back/Biceps
Thurs - Off
Fri - Legs/Traps
Sat - Off
Sun - Repeat
