Klmer Ritter asked this question the other day.
I have given it some thought and I think: The first gift was life and the first Christmas gift was the birth of of Jesus. Several people said it was "love" , a good answer. I think the first gift and the first Christmas gift was wrapped in love and tied together with hope and faith. When we accept all the gifts God gives us, then we have our salvation that was given to us by the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. His love and grace is a gift when we accept it as a gift. No gift becomes a gift until someone pays for it, gives it to someone and that person accepts as gift. Merry Christmas everyone! James N. Actually I had a cousin who shoplifted all his gifts, so that "paying for it" part isn't strictly true.

Christmas gifts came about as a tradition because the Three Wise Men gave Jesus gold frankincense and myrrh. So those are the first christmas gifts.

The first gift given was the bag of gold coins that St. Nicholas Bishop of Myra tossed through the 3 young virgins' window.

Nice answers, but I suspect they were looking for the gifts the wise men brought for baby Jesus. "The wise men found Jesus and Mary at Bethlehem in a house. They worshipped Jesus, and offered gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh."

Jesus is the fist, and greatest gift of Christmas! (Though, if you were to ask my 15 year old son, I'm sure it will be his new computer!)

Gold. But does anyone know what happened to it. Half inched, by the landlord of the inn in front of the stable is my guess.
