I am dating an American girl and want to spend some time over here, maybe a year or two, get a job and a place. I dont want to be a full citizen, just the rights to work and live here temporarily. However, Immigration have been no help and the Government websites are so damn complicated its untrue. Anyone who has done this or with helpful specific advice is very welcome.

best way would be apply for a work visa but you gotta find an employer who wants to sponsor you and go through the process of filing the paperwork for you. So unless you are a scientist, a doctor or a supermodel ect it will be very hard to find a company willing to do that. You could apply for a student visa (f1) that would allow u to work part time but i dont know u might not want to go to school. Otherwise you could try for the greencard lottery and hope you are lucky enough to win. They give away 50,000 greencards every year but millions apply this is the official website www.dvlottery.state.gov, its free to try!!

best way to do this without marrying your girlfriend is to get a work visa. if the rules havent changed, you'll need to find a company that wants to hire you and be willing to do the paperwork on you -- you fill it out but they need to input info as well. some employers will do it but some don't want to mess with it.

good luck.

please note: when you order tea at a restaurant in the us, most likely you will get a large glass of ice tea.

I honestly don't know...but I THINK you must apply for a work visa. Maybe if you were to call the Dept. of Immigration, they could tell you which paperwork you would need to obtain that.
