Here is what some people do to get hours...as long as you can get the approval to do it first.
You could take a chance without the approval in hopes that it would be accepted.
Most agencies insist on being included on any options you may have, especially if you have delayed in doing it to start with.
So! Get up, asap, and go next door (or others homes of your friends or neighbors that you know personally). Offer to do any legitimate hour(s) of any acceptable community service as may be required by those you have to report to. Small business owners who know you could also be a good place to look.
In exchange, they would provide you a receipt for your "free" service(s) hours that you put in. Make sure their receipt has their logo and address on it at the top. Its the proof that you will need.
If they do not have something you can do, ask them to provide you with a "personal" referral wherein they do the calling to set you up with someone they know and that they are recommending you before you even get there.
If you don't get your 40 hours before your deadline of the 26th, its almost the 23rd now, at least you will have show some good faith to try to get it done on time.Do something, like you are doing by sending out this message, outstanding! Good luck to you in all you do.
Bless you in your efforts.

Not trying to be mean, but you're gonna be hard pressed to make it because it will be extremely difficult to get that many hours in by then. I'm sure they gave you more than a week to get the service done so they'll expect it to be all done.
But you're in luck because since it's the holiday season there's things you can do on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Find a soup kitchen and help serve the holiday meals. Soup kitchens are always happy to have extra hands.
If you can get someone to verify that you did it you could always just walk along the side of the road or in the park and pick up trash.
Also check with people you know who do community service type jobs to begin with. They might be able to let you tag along to do some stuff with them.
Good luck!

There is always a way to get community service hours by working in a nursing home serving the food, going to church and helping out if any events were there, go to the hospital and talk to the manager to ask if they can give you some community service hours. Raking the neighbors leaves and or mowing the lawn. Go to like big business to ask what can you do for some community service hours. I have tried all of those and they have seemed to help.

You need to complete a full weeks worth of work in four days, and you are trying to do this over the Christmas holiday. Ha ha, your screwed. Start thinking about pleading with the judge for an extension.
The BEST you could do is knock-out a few hours at a homeless shelter our soup kitchen (especially on Christmas). I doubt anyone will give you 40 hours, but you might be able to convince them to sign-off on 40 hours if you agree to work for them more later.

This time of year, there are great opportunities for community service.
You can volunteer to wrap gifts at a local mall (many of the gift wrapping booths are actually manned by volunteers for a charity).
You can volunteer at local churches and shelters to help serve or deliver Christmas meals. Check your local newspaper today, it should have listings for this.
Another good place would be to talk to a neighborhood church. Many of them hear about families that need help for Christmas, and put together boxes, gifts, etc. They may need help putting all those boxes together and delivering them.
A friend of mine did a lot of hours by volunteering to decorate churches for Christmas....might be a little late for that, but maybe they need help taking decorations down the day after....

A lot of people volunteer on December 25th, but if you call those agencies on the 24th, chances are they need help setting up the day before. Try the local mission, nursing homes, VA hospitals, children's hospitals, and anyone feeding the homeless on Xmas Day. Also, you can generally visit patients in nursing homes and VA hospitals any day of the year, so try that.

40 hours might be a stretch by the end of the day today if you don't already have some it done already, but I would suggest your local Hands-On Network affiliate. Your local affiliate is called Hands On Inland Empire:
http://www.handsoninlandempire.org/
You can find one-time volunteer opportunities in your area on their project calendar.

you can do it, there are a lot of places looking for people to help out on Christmas Day to help deliver food and presents to those less fortunate. You can do that or you can go volunteer at a Nursing Home, YMCA or Boys and Girls Club (any youth place).
