I have a one-year-old cat whom I utterly adore. I've had him since he was a kitten. Just wondering...what does it mean when he butts heads with me? When he's walking by or laying on the sofa and I lean down to him to kiss him, he always pushes his little head into my nose or something. Anyone know?

Two different reasons -- if he does it repeatedly, he's just marking you, like furniture, claiming you as his property or part of his domain. If it's the simple "head-butt-of-love," it's considered by some animal behaviorists as a sign of submissiveness, acknowledging that you're the boss and greeting you as his superior.

First poster was correct. It is a greeting to say that the cat loves you! You can witness this same headbutt from Lions in the wild. They will headbutt to greet other members of their pride. You are her pride member.

Edit: When he rubs the sides of his face against you he is rubbing his scent glands on you because he considers you a part of his territory. When he headbutts this is his greeting to you.

He loves you! Also if you are given access to an exposed belly be very flattered. Watch out for a swishing tail though! Meow!

I think he kisses you back! Our cat does this too, only when he is in a very loving mood. I really think he is imitating our move when we kiss him, because cats don't usually do that if they haven't learned it from a person who kisses them.

He really, really, really likes you and is telling you in unmistakable cat language that you're his best buddy. If he starts rasping you with his tongue, that's the complete cat love statement. (I have several cats that give me kitty kisses, and it's the ultimate cat complement.)

He just likes to play a lot and loves you. If you don't like it you could always train her to stop but it's just a sign of affection.

when a cat rubs its head on sumthing it is marking its territory. it wants to be the owner of everything. u don't own ur cat, ur cat owns u. i know, ive had cats all my life.

They're called "head bumps" and it's the way they show you affection and trust. If the kitty ever "gives" you his belly to rub, that is the ULTIMATE in trust. I love it when mine ram into me. :)
