It isn't lead, but yes, most cats are extremely attracted to it. It's shiny, and it dangles, and it moves with the lightest breeze -- they play with it and attack it and bite it and usually end up eating it.
The problem is, tinsel is one of the #1 killers of cats at Christmastime. It gets wound up in their intestines. Nothing else can get through, and sometimes it literally ties their insides in knots or cuts them up inside!
If you have a cat, please don't ever put tinsel on your tree. If you suspect your cat has eaten tinsel, please take the cat to the vet right away!

Emergency vet now - if the tinsel gets tangled interior (possibly) the cat can die - the tinsel must be bumped off. in no way ever use tinsel or string stuff on a Christmas tree in case you have pets - it relatively is the #a million rule in decorations. do away with all the tinsel from the tree and get the cat to the vet.

Cats do sometimes like to chew, and sometimes ingest tinsel. I question that there is any lead tinsel available anymore though, I think that was taken off the market long ago. Today it is made of Mylar plastic, which isn't any better as it can cause an intestinal blockage which can kill them quite quickly.

My cats seem to love the stuff. This Christmas I decided to skip the tinsel all together.

It can also get tangled up in their intestines and cause all kinds of problems. I found out they weren't supposed to eat it the first Christmas after I was married when I saw Buffy walking through the house with a piece hanging out of her butt. (I also found pieces of the ribbons I had so painstakingly put on the packages in her litter box!) It was funny...but then I found out that it really can hurt them. For some reason they are really attracted to it.

I didn't know until I saw what looked like silver spaghetti sticking out of the wrong end of my cat. So the answer is yes and it's very dangerous.

I've never seen or heard of that. Sorry. I know I heard that cats will climb your tree, but mine has never tried.
