The advantage is how they can keep you in the car where it's design can protect you in a collision.
When a vehicle collides with another or with a stationary object 3 collisions occur.
1. the impact of the vehicle
2. the impact of you hitting your vehicle, or if your not strapped in, you hitting an object outside the vehicle.
3. the impact of your internal organs hitting the inside of your body.
By using a seat belt, your allowing the impact absorption capabilities of your car to help limit the impact of you and your organs as described in 2 and 3 above.
The disadvantages of using a seat belt are that they are not made very well. They can be uncomfortable while rubbing on your clothing and neck. I think seat belts can be made to be a lot safer and more comfortable.

If worn properly seat-belts can save your life in a car accident (advantage). The disadvantages, in a real bad car accident are that a seat-belt can keep someone who is trying to save your life from being able to help you. Although we live in a free country, we are sometimes required (by law) to fasten, strap, buckle or put on our safety belts for our own protection. Some people say "I have the right to choose to wear it, or not to wear it". In the perspective of law enforcement, its is cheaper and quicker to clean up an accident with injuries than an accident with fatalities.

In my 28 years as a LEO, I have never had to cut out a dead person from a seatbelt. I have had to cut out injuried drivers and passengers. And I have seen plenty of dead drivers and passengers who were not wearing seatbelts.

The seatbelt will help you survive a crash. BTW I believe we all suffer when someone is seriously injured or killed when they were not wearing a seatbelt. We pay the hospital bills of the uninsured, unbelted driver. We should have the right to make them buckle up.

On the highway seat belts clearly can be life savers -- in town at speeds under 45m.p.h. they are virtually useless. At less than highway speeds allmost all fatalities and serious injuries are the result of side impacts and seat belts help little, if at all, for these.
The frightening thing in my opinion is that Big Brother will someday decide that seat belts are inadequate and require us to wear straight jackets with deathgrip harnesses or some such.

Aside from safety in an impact, it should also be noted that seatbelts add a great deal of stability to your driving position.

Advantage - they save your lives in accidents!!!

Disadvantages - when you have false tan on, it gets onto the seat belt, then next time you wear a white top, you get a really nice stripe across it!!!!! Plus they really crease your clothes especially when you're wearing linen!! lol

in Australia they are compulsory to wear them and it should be everywhere in the world. they are designed to limit injury when in a accident just like airbags are. when combined u would have a greater chance of not being seriously injured. So there are no disadvantages to wearing seat belts, and if anyone disagrees they are a bloody idiot.

my friend was in an accident years ago when we were in school and her necklass was stuck on her seatbelt and it strangled her and she died. my step-cousin was also in a car accident wearing his seatbelt and died. i guess it depends on the circumstances of the accident.
