The term Apostle was meant to indicate a chosen witness of Jesus Christ. After Judas killed himself the remaining apostles decided to choose another. They stipulated that that replacement had to have been with Christ since the beginning of his ministry. The only apostle other than that was Paul, who also witnessed Christ directly in a vision or even a long series of visions/experiences. So an Apostle is someone who has actually seen Christ and has been chosen by Christ (or a method selected by Apostles chosen by Christ) to be a witness for Christ.

The Greek word a‧po'sto‧los (apostle) comes from the common greek verb a‧po‧stel′lo, meaning simply “send forth (or off).” Jesus said, "A slave is not greater than his master, nor is one that is sent forth [a‧po′sto‧los] greater than the one that sent him.” (Joh 13:16) Hebrews 3:1 refers even to Jesus as an apostle, because of his having been sent forth by God. The 12 apostles were all commissioned to do the preaching work, and for a time even performed miracles.

A special messenger of Jesus Christ; a person to whom Jess delegated authority for certain task. The word apostle is used of those twelve disciples whom Jesus sent out, to by two, during His ministry and in Galilee to expand His own ministry o preaching and healing. It was on that occasion, evidently, that they were first called "apostles". Mark 3:14; 6:30 I pray that this might help in your walk with the Lord. May God bless you and cause his face to shine upon you always.

A Disciple can be compared to a Protege.
And an Apostle to a Mentor.
When Jesus was alive, he was the Mentor/Apostle, and His followers were the Proteges/Disciples.
After Jesus ascended and the Holy Spirit moved among the disciples, they become MentorsApostles and their followers became Proteges/Disciples.
