Oahu has a LOT of the more famous things (tourist attractions) that most people are familiar with - The Polynesian Cultural Center, Waikiki beach, The North Shore big wave surfing, Pearl Harbor, tons of restaurants and shopping, botanical gardens, great beaches, etc.
Maui is amazing in its natural setting - it is REALLY dry on one side and almost constantingly raining on the other side. it has a 10,000 foot high dormant volcano and some great little towns.... also one of the best spots on earth to see humpback whales. It tends to be a lot less urban and a bit more relaxing.
So it really all depends on what you are looking for in your trip to Hawaii...if it is your first time i would say go to Oahu.

They are definitely two totally different Islands...We have been to both and to tell you the truth...I love Oahu and Maui equally...many people do not take to Oahu since it has more of a "City" feel transplanted into the Tropics...I don't have a problem with that since I don't mind being around alot of people...which is what is on Oahu, especially in Downtown Honolulu/Waikiki...I believe Oahu now has over a Million People and there are just about as many cars (lots of traffic). Not so bad on the North Shore. And the Arizona Memorial is something not to be missed...our family visits and pays our Respects EVERY time we go to Oahu. Now I Love Maui for the Opposite reasons that I Love Oahu...Less Crowded,Tranquil and more Laid back (you're on Hawaiian-Time on Maui) that is the reason we Always save Maui for the 2nd half of our vacations in Hawaii...a little Down-Time before heading home to California...So really the choice is yours...I will post both of my lists of things to do on Both Islands and then you can choose~~Aloha~~Kuuipo Michelle~~

I would go to Oahu. Of the four major Hawaiian islands, Maui is my least favorite. I'm not really sure why -- just don't feel connected there as I do on Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island. (BTW, I have lived on the Big Island before and I currently live on Kauai.) Oahu has so much to offer. It is NOT just Honolulu, even though that's a great city! People who say "Honolulu is just like Los Angeles" have clearly never lived in either place. I have lived in L.A. and I visit Oahu often, so I know they are *nothing* alike! But aside from the city part of Oahu, the island is gorgeous. Stunning beaches, beautiful scenery, and so much to do! Hike Diamond Head, go on a catamaran ride off Waikiki Beach, shop, eat at the great restaurants, visit the North Shore and check out the killer waves (and the surfers -- yum!), have shave ice at Aoki's...
Ah, I wish I was there right now!
Have a great time. Aloha!

Both are great!
Oahu is more Americanized, populated, and also alot more tourists! North Shore is great to visit, Polynesian CC is also fun! This is where I great up and its way fun, on the other hand if want to get away and a little less populated Maui is great but Kauai is my favorite! Much more green!

Maui is more relaxing because it is populated with fewer people. Oahu, however, is interesting because of all the touristy things to do there. It is really crowded in Oahu.... 900,000 of the one million Hawaiian islanders live on Oahu.

Depends upon how easy for one to get around. Maui has no bus system and its centers of population exist within their own seperate orbits whereas on O'ahu you can circle the Island and in turn visit and/or stay in different hubs of human activity. It is true that Maui has more rural enclaves but those places that are crowded are worse than O'ahu due to poor infrastructure/roads. I would have to give the edge to O'ahu for things to do,quality of Beaches (sharks love Maui waters), variety of resteraunts and sports venues such as The Aloha Stadium and The Stan SHerrif Center.
