my brother's girlfriend's dad died of a heart attack last night. my brother was at the house and tried to help but couldn't. WHat do say or do?

Express your sincere regrets to his gf, and ask if there is any way you can help.
Also be there for your brother, because he will probably be going through a lot right now. Try to be as helpful as possible, be it going to the funeral, or just be around to talk.
Good luck, this kind of situation is aways hard.

This happened with my father, she needs a lot of support, and you may think that you really wouldn't matter right now, but you do.
I'd get a sympathy card, bring over flowers or a dinner dish and be there for the family.
