Some do (Charlie comes to mind.) Many atheists become atheists because they see the terrible things religion does, and some have had these terrible things doine to them. The fact that so few people share their view of religion tends to lead to bitterness, because it feels that there is no hope for change. I am not bitter, but i comepletely understand those who are.
Why can't people just get past converting one another and just learn to accept each other's differences? Because religion is hurting people. It is hurting me, my family, my country, and the whole world. It is possible religion could be the cause of a nuclear war, which would definately effect me. Religious idiocy pushes into my daily life. When 85% or more of the country feels a certain way about something, anything, it tends to influence public policy and their actions. And when that something causes them to believe that "Atheists shouldnt be considered citizens of the united states. This is one nation under god" (george bush sr.) or to believe that the apacolypse is going to happen in the next few years like george bush jr. does. It causes people to hate gay people, and prevent them from having the oppurtunities under the law that everyone else has. It causes people to become divided in yet another way. It creates conflict where it is not necesary. When people in power are making decisions based on faulty logic and crazy stories, and these decisions affect my life, i think it is time to speak out.

Well, I think it is because there was, is, and probably always will be some corrupt churches (also in Christianity since you mention Christianity) and church leaders, and this much is true: churches founded by or based on God's teachings are managed by humans who are flawed and fallible, so Atheists can definitely argue the flaws in religions. That, by the way, does not mean God does not exist. People are just really predicable at messing things up--religion included. Also, Christians walk by faith not fact--a practice that doesn't fair well with Atheists. Atheists need facts that God exists, and as such, they put up a strong argument that there are not enough facts to back religion up. But still, those arguments do not mean God does not exist. So the Atheists who share the Universe with Christians are probably more bitter that Christians don't come up with their conclusions---no God. And again...that bitterness doesn't make them right!! Great question.

I'm impressed that an atheist (which I think you are based on your question) can admit that atheism can indeed have a zealot quality to it. As a Christian, I can understand why we are passionate about Him in which we believe, but I can't understand having such bitterness involved in non-belief. Let me demonstrate the Christian's point of view on this: Imagine that you are convinced with all your being that you have the cure for what ails someone you care about, but the person refuses to take it, would you have a hard time accepting that refusal? Would you keep trying? Would you want to share that cure with all of humanity?

Everyone has their own reasons for what they believe, I don't believe Atheist when they say there is no God for the simple fact that there are so many things in my life that have happened to me and for me that I know there has to be a God. I do believe there is something bigger than me and who created me, but these are my beliefs and I am not necessarily saying anyone has to believe that with me...
I feel if Atheist looked at it in the same way that no one has to necessarily believe you for your point to be heard. Just respect someone else not all Christians in this forum or in the world for that matter take what you say and tell you that you are going to hell, it's just those hypocritical ones, I can not tell you that because for all I know something could happen in your lives tomorrow that may shake up your beliefs and make you see things in the same way that a Christian sees things and the same thing goes for me...
Who am I to say that something may happen tomorrow or in the next 5 minutes that may shake up my faith and make me go with what the Atheist says. I think if everyone would just respect each other and what they believe and just do their best to answer questions strictly on what you believe and not voice your opinions on someone Else's beliefs simply out of respect than may be people would not be so judgmental and critical of one another.

I am sorry for the negative things that are happening to the person who commented above named "Concerned." I agree with you that a lot of people use their beliefs to attempt to justify wrong doing. It is pretty messed up when someone is supposed to be promoting something good and they do bad things. I think the issue is not with God. I think it is with people. There are people who claim to be Christians but don't act like it... and there are a lot of other people who claim to be lots of things they don't truly seem to be. I think a genuine person is one that doesn't just talk the talk... becuase talk is easy.
I think there are two types of people: The ones who try their best to do what they truly believe is right... and those who just want to say "this is who I am" even though they are not even really trying.
So I encourage everyone, no matter what you believe is right, to truly think it out and then genuinely try to live it out. Then if you find you were wrong on things, adjust accordingly.
P.S. To those really trying to be genuine, even you will mess up sometimes, and maybe even look hypocritical... But learn from it and keep trying to better yourself.

It isn't that athiests have an axe to grind all the time, i don't believe. Or that christians do. But, i do think that christians "know" they're right in their minds, and everyone else just hasn't figured it out yet, apparently. Atheist's on the other hand, don't care. Because they have much less of a desire to end up in an imaginary world on the clouds with someone they've never "met" or "talked to". ya know?

As long as Christianity, as well as several of the other "ultimate truths", have as their end and gleefully sought after goal, the END OF THE WORLD, and as long as they believe that their rights are being violated if they are denied the opportunity to use the coercive power of the state to shove their god down every ones throat, you will have to put up with us being in your face. Why should we abandon a forum where we can let you know that you will not be allowed to carry out the silly "End Times" rubbish that you seem to forget would include the rest of us.

I agree.
Although in response to Athiests, they always have a bone to pick with God. For someone they do not believe in, they sure do have a lot to say about him, or negative feelings about him. I don't know if that's because a lot of Christians feel the need to speak about God to Athiests, but it's not because we want to make anyone mad, it's more because 'witnessing' is a deed that God expects us to do.
I've also noticed that a lot of Gay people are Athiests as well. I'm not sure if that is because they feel shunned by the Christian community and threatened by God, so they tend to lash out at God, or what exactly is going on, but whatever the case, I think everyone is entitled to whom they want to believe in. When it comes down to it, neither you or I make the end decision.

Because my 6 year old daughter is being harrassed at school by a 6 year old boy telling her that she is going to hell if she doesn't believe in heaven.
Because my 2 year old daughter with Down syndrome could possibly benefit from stem cell research, but the line between church and state is being erased on a daily basis.
Because Jerry Falwell and his religious right are taking over the republican party and fast forwarding their agenda.
Because at work people will gather in the common area and joke about those stupid atheists who must have an IQ of 12 that are gathering in order to show the world just how dumb they are.
Because people always come up to me and ask me what church I attend and when I tell them I don't, they try and bring me to theirs.
Because when I dropped out of the church I belonged to for several years, the missionaries would keep coming to my door, ring the doorbell (and wake up the baby), and argue with my wife that I am still a member no matter what she believes.
Because there are so many childrens programs around here that are run by religious organizations that end up taking so much of the proceeds to put toward their church and take from the children's mouths.
Because people who don't believe in each other's religious beliefs are fighting on a daily basis and are killing, raping, terrorizing, torturing, and maiming, all in defense of their own religion.
That is why...

Why should atheists be bitter? Most are happy and good-natured, making what they can of their own lives on their own terms. Bitterness is generally a reaction to a perceived past wrong having been perpetrated against you-- it's not an outlook on life, or the result of one's outlook on life, by itself. Just as I wouldn't automatically expect bitterness from any religious group just on the basis of that person's religion, I wouldn't expect it of atheists just because they are atheists (i.e.-- you need something to be bitter _about_). If you're finding a lot of bitter atheists, you should probably ask them _why_ they seem bitter (or perhaps overly defensive might be what you mean).
Incidentally, why "pick on" a Christian, unless s/he invited it by expecting you to agree with things you cannot, or trying to forcefully convert you or something?
