Depending on the strength of the magnet and how long it was held near the TV set, the tube may or may not be permanantly damaged. Usually if it was for a short time then your TV tube will be back to normal soon. You've probably got odd colours in the corners or something, it should be fine soon.

how I know this one, my son did it showed me what he learend at school, but that was a while ago so I just know mine only lasted for about a week but then he did something else to it, because the teacher got in trouble for telling all the kids to do this at home you have to demagnitize it, that is the part I don't remeber but I still have the tv 19 years later and no probs with it

Here's your $10 fix. Run out and buy a this soldering gun.
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062755&cp=&origkw=soldering+gun&kw=soldering+gun&parentPage=search
Plug it in near the TV, start out about 3 feet from the TV and pull and hold the trigger while slowly bringing the gun towards the spot. Still holding the trigger, rotate the gun a few times and slowly pull it away(at least 3 feet before releasing the trigger).
Repeat if nesessary.

You should be able to correct the cathode ray tube's viewing surface with a tool called a ''degausser''. Go to "www.uexcell.com" and enter ''Model Number: a06052600ux0007'' . The total cost including shipping is under 25.00$. You can't even talk to a repairman for that amount!

Sounds like you will have to have the picture tube "deGaussed."
When a magnet gets too close it disturbs the color pattern. You usually end up with color blotches around the perimeter of the picture tube.

I remember doing this as a kid, it gradually went away and it was fine after a few days.
