You can still get her fixed. Spaying her at a young age makes them less likely to get the cancers, even if it is after her first heat. if she is in heat the spay can be done but it might cost you a little more because the surgery is more delicate during the heat cycle. I would definitely get her spayed soon, or at least keep her confined if she is in heat so you dont end up with unwanted puppies or take her in to get spayed and she is pregnant. Even if that does happen you can get her spayed, but I know most people would feel bad if they spayed her and she was pregnant and had to kill the puppies. Dont worry though about the surgery, they are very common and at the clinic I used to work at we had at least 1 or 2 in heat spays a week and rarely had any problems (they just bleed more during the surgery and the tissue is much more delicate). I hope you still get her fixed. If you have any questions email me. Happy holidays

Do you mean she is a Dachshund? That is the correct spelling. I have never heard of a teckel? I have two mini's and it is possible that she is in heat. Just keep her away from all other male dogs and you should be okay until the heat is over. I would get her into be spayed as soon as her cycle is done. You should still be safe and clear of any major diseases. Good Luck!

Studies in dogs have shown that the risk of developing mammary cancer is 0.05 percent if the dog is spayed before the first heat, 8 percent if spayed after the first and before the second heat, and 26 percent after the second heat.

Her chances are still very low, as long as you get her fixed while she's still young.
She really shouldn't be in heat that young, but some dogs mature faster than others just like some people do. Don't let her breed -- she's far too young for it.
If you leave her 'intact' the chance of getting cancer raises a lot. Have it done as soon as you can.

I have always had my girls spayed before their first heat because I have always read that getting it done then reduced the risk of cancer the most, and my vets have always encouraged it as well. However, I have also heard it the other way around! It really depends on who you talk to, but I have always and will always have it done before the first heat, at least until solid proof becomes available that having it done after the first heat is better.

The more heat cycles she goes through the higher her risk of cancer will be.
Have her fixed as soon as you can.
Many female dogs who are unaltered end up the mamary cancer if they live that long.
It will also eliminate the risk of a pyometra. Which is a uterine infection that can be life threatening if not caught in time.

That is a personal decision. A risk is just that, a risk. There is no guarantee that your dog will get cancer if not spayed. Make an informed decision. Don't let fear make the decision. Personally, if breeding is not desired, I see no reason to not spay. Again, this is personal. I wish you and your dog happiness.

I don't recall the exact statistics, but after her 3rd heat spaying her won't reduce her chances of breast cancer. Although it does eliminate the risk of pyometra which is an infection of the uterus that older female dogs can get when they have not been spayed.

I believe the risks increase with every heat she's allowed to follow through with.
I definitely recommend spaying her. It just makes a happier dog, overall.

Most puppies are fixed when they are 5-6 months old. Take her to the vet to find out if she is really in heat to find out what can be done.
