I have 3 kids (twins 5 and 14 month) We have an outdoor dog and an indoor. I grew up with Pomeranian and Chihuahua but I know both of these dogs tend to have 1 person they bond with and get very aggressive with kids when they want the attention. I recently got a Pug after much research with my husband and he is great full of energy and loves to cuddle with the kids even when one is pulling from one end and another from the other end. He is very resilient, I think your family would be very happy with a Pug... Good Luck

Whatever you do don't get any of the following dogs. Cockerspaniels, (very high maintence) and they snip. Minature pincher, top of the list dog likely to bite, also in that catagory are daschunds. Shelties are highly intelligent but very high strung. The best dogs are the bigger ones. good luck in your search. One of my favorite little dogs are beagles. Very sweet and loving. There is also a mix called a puggle ( beagle and pug ) that i love.

Yorkiers and Boston Terriers are said to be great. A rottweiler, if purchased from a real breeder and raised correctly, can also be great - when raised from a very young age around children they see all the time, they are very protective and affectionate. My best friend has one and he always licks her babies face and lays near him whenever the baby is outside.

My eight year old son just got a shiatsu. It is a great puppy for him. It loves just to sit in his lap and be read to, but also loves to run and play. It is content doing anything. Shiatsu are very social dogs and love companionship, but can be stubborn.

We have a Lhasa mix who is wonderful with our children and tolerant of other dogs. The groomers don't even hook him up when he gets "haircuts". Also, we both work and are gone for about 10 hours a day - he has never had an accident! Good luck with your hunt!

I think cocker spaniels are good. I don't know if they are considered a lap dog though
