I asked a fairly similar question yesterday and received some interesting answers. It seems like there are a lot of people who are extremely intelligent that actually believe in God, Jesus, the Bible, etc. Why, I don't know even after reading their answers. It would be insiteful to feel their inner thoughts and feelings, and I think that is the only way to understand them, but I cannot get that from people talking to me or writing about it. It just boggles my mind on how people in the 21st century can still believe in these things that lead to such atrocities in the modern world. Just think of all of the extra money we'd have to put toward programs to help with our children, those who are poverty stricken or unable to work due to disabilities, or hunger, etc. Also, we would stop hating so many other people just because they were outside of our "in-group". It's interesting, I am VERY involved in my community and see thousands of people on the street that I know who i can call my friends, but the second someone finds out I'm atheist, I'm out of their ingroup and become the enemy. Interesting, just because I have a slightly different view on things, and don't even share it with them, if they find out then I am judged. THAT is what is really sad! That and a little 6 year old biy following my little girl around school telling her she is going to hell because she doesn't believe in heaven, this on a daily basis!

I like to lie about my IQ; what about you?
There is an inverse correlation between religion and IQ (A very strong one at that, about R=-0.88 world wide). This means the more religious a country is the lower it's average IQ is, so generally people with lower IQ's are more religious.
There is no 'level' at which you stop believing in these things. I suppose that has more to do with upbringing and personality, although somewhat related to intelligence. A lot of intelligent people that have been brought up that way their whole life get really good at defending absurdities.
But yea, people that actually believe we're going to hell are idiots. Don't worry about it. Maybe they'll grow a peanut in their head sometime this century.

As I'm sure you already know, it's a little more complicated than that. A person with a higher IQ is better able to grasp things, so, if he is on a quest, for instance, to come to a logical conclusion about the validity of religion, he is better able to follow the path that will allow him to come to an informed conclusion. (usually a basic understanding of science and an unbiased historical accounting of religion) A person with a lower IQ, whose ego will not allow him to admit he incapable of following such a path, will take the easy way out and grasp at religion, which removes the need for any further thought processes and even allow him to feel smug and superior in his blind ignorance.

Many who believe that they "saved" and others are not, usually seem to have no basis for thinking this. From a Christian point of view, these people are underestimating Divine Mercy. Why would God create Buddhists, Muslims, and Hindus only to condemn them to hell? This makes no sense and we must believe in the Divine Mercy of God and refrain from believing that we are "chosen", "elect", or "saved" anymore than anyone else. If anything, Christians are given a greater responsibility to uphold virtue and are at greater risk of losing heaven because they have the knowledge and can have the will to deny it, whereas people of other faiths who have not been exposed to the One True God do not cary this responsibility. This is a purely Christian point of view.

Interesting question. I don't think anyone has done that specific research.
What has been proved through numerous, independent studies is that Atheists, as a rule, are measurably more intelligent than those that believe supernatural beings are controlling the universe and/or the events of their lives.

In those terms, never. I know people with degrees from universities who still harbor this idea...I agree there are many misconceptions about 'tickets to heaven' and such, but I don't think IQ has that much to do with it...

Ouch. I'm Muslim (Arabic: One who submits to/serve God), Muslims believe in Christ as one of God's 5 mightiest prophets, but I don't know much about the "going to Hell" part for those who don't believe he's Lord as Christians do.

I don't know but it has got to be pretty low. I think the majority of Christians don't even believe that. Only the brainwashed fanatics accept that as truth.

My IQ is nearly 150, Hell is not a place of fiery torment where God is going to send all the wicked to be punished for all eternity. Hell is the common grave of mankind and all who die regardless of whether you have accepted Jesus or not go there. The only exception are the remnant of the 144,000 who do go to heaven to serve as priests and kings with Christ Jesus, as they when they die will be transformed in the twinkling of an eye to spirit life to be with our Lord. It is what happens after death that matters, for all those in their memorial tombs will be resurrected back to life on earth in the flesh, both the righteous and the unrighteous.
