My dog is very dominant in general, with people and other dogs. Sometimes, when we sit together, he does to me (my legs, feet, trousers or arms) this grooming thing they do to themselves, when they clean themselves wit their front teeth. I would guess it is a sign of caring for me, but he won't let go when I tell him No, the more i try to stop him the more stubbornly he does it, so is it perhaps a way of showing dominance over me?

He had obedience training. He normally stops whatever he is doing when I say No to him, but not this specific thing! That's why I am curuious what it means!

Yes it is a way that dogs show dominance. You need to do a few things to stop him from doing that or you may have other problems as time goes on. One way is do not let him sit on the same furniture as you and do not sit on the floor with him. When he comes near you do not pet him unless he is sitting. This will show him he must do what you want to get a reward. If he starts licking that is still a sign of dominance so that should not be allowed. When leaving the house do not let him go in front of you and when you let him in make him sit right out side the door before you let him in. Same with feeding. Make him sit before putting the food down and then don't let him jump up and eat have him wait a secound til you let him eat. These little things can start to show your dog who is boss. Most dogs do not want to be boss they just instictivly take over if we let them. I would suggest a good dog class.

There is no harm in shaving your shihtzu. Many many owners opt for this as there is less work involved in keeping up with them. You can pre-clip before the bath. Don't worry about trying to brush him out before a bath either. The hair is coming off. If he were a full coated to the floor dog yes prebrush. But he isn't. Yes many people don't understand this but it is possible. The clippers you bought ( usually called pet clippers at walmart and petsmart those kinds of places) just aren't made to work that well. The blade only comes in one size and doesn't come off and you have to rely on the blade combs. Not worth the money. A professional clipper and blades are a much better choice but they will set you back quite a few dollars. But it is an investment to use over and over again. If he is really matted at this point, it would be better to pay the vet groomer to have his sedate and shaved down the first time. Then you keep up with it at home. If he gets a smoothie at the vet the first time, you may be able to overcome his fears or aggressions at home with good consistent training. Often times what an owner thinks is fear is actually a dog just being "pissy" about being made to do something he doesn't want to do. The only way a dog has to tell you that is either fight or flee. Fleeing isn't an option at the groomers so fighting is the only way to go for him. It is very difficult to groom a shihtzu who doens't want it done. Between the slightlys smooshie noses, the pokie outie eyes and the short legs they are just a tought cookie. If you are patient but firm, don't back down, use common sense and take you time you can probably learn to groom your boy yourself. There are some very good books, videos and online chat lists you can reference for help. I just can't stress too strongly though how dangerous grooming and aggressive dog is. As a novice you are running the risk of hurting your dog or getting hurt if you aren't very very careful. However it can be done. As a professional groomer I don't generally recommend owners try to groom their own pets ( otherwise I'd be out of work), but if the desire is strong enough, and the commitment is high enough I'll do everything I can to help them learn to do it safely.

Dogs view their owners and families as members of their dog pack, not as human beings who own them. When your dog is trying to groom you, he's doing it because you're a member of his pack in his eyes.

However, if he's disobedient to you, you're going to need to take him to obedience school to teach him that you are the "alpha-dog" and that he must obey you. Especially if he's doing this to other people, it's really time for obedient school. You didn't say how old your dog is, but even old dogs can become good dogs with training.

The truth is your dog thinks of you as the Alpha.
My dog does this with me every day because he thinks I'm the alpha-male of the pack. That, to him, means he has to care for me and make sure that I'm in good shape. It's not really annoying once you know why they are doing it. It's kind of flattering in a way. It's not about dominance, it's about affection and your dog thinks it's his/her job.

i would think that it is dominance over you because my dog use to do that before i took him to the vet and asked the vet what was wronge with him. he is was used to you and he just cant let you go. he might just need a female dog in the house. try getting one.

It means He loves you and he is glad that you own him. The dog feels greatful for having a nice owner like you so he licks you.

It considers you the leader of the pack and shows you affection to earn your favor.

Hahaha, maybe he just thinks you are dirty, or likes the texture of your pants. My dog used to do that to my blanket.

It could be dominance, or that he considers you a member of his family or pack.

He doesn't seem to realize that you're a human, and he needs to treat you with respect.

If he won't stop, you'll have to smack him. Sorry.

he is showing you that he loves you, and by doing that he is showing that he is dominate.
